Behind CashKO’s Nationwide Push Is An API Platform Doing The Distribution Heavy Lifting

The headline is a nationwide calamity-insurance rollout. The real story, for anyone watching Philippine InsurTech, is the plumbing underneath it: RuralNet’s API-driven platform, which is what lets CashKO scale without building a traditional insurance sales network.

The timing owes itself to a few things happening at once. Disaster frequency is rising, with NDRRMC data showing roughly 7.5 million people affected by cyclones Luis, Maymay, Neneng, and this year’s habagat, disasters that don’t just hurt borrowers, they hurt MFIs’ loan books when repayment capacity collapses across an entire region at once.

The demand was already there, too: CashKO Insurance Brokerage CEO Justin Arcenas told the 2026 MCPI conference that 87% of borrowers surveyed in 2024 wanted calamity coverage, giving partner lenders a clear incentive to offer it. And the distribution model is built to scale — CashKO, RuralNet’s microinsurance subsidiary, integrates directly into partner microfinance institutions’ existing systems, and rather than a one-size-fits-all policy, each partner can configure its own coverage parameters, payout thresholds, and loan-integration rules, a “made-to-measure” model, as the company describes it, refined through an earlier pilot that delivered relief payouts following Typhoons Tino and Uwan.

Today’s product is indemnity insurance, paid out against verified home-damage documentation, typically around PHP 5,000 per claim. In Q4, CashKO adds parametric coverage, payouts triggered by satellite-confirmed thresholds such as typhoon category or earthquake magnitude rather than individual inspections, a model built specifically to hold up when claims volume spikes across a whole disaster zone.

“For vulnerable communities, the value of insurance is measured by how quickly and effectively it can help them recover when disaster strikes,” said Arcenas, CEO of CashKO Insurance Brokerage.

Since 2019, the network has processed more than 33,000 claims among over 6 million underserved Filipinos, with claims volume rising to 16,000-plus in 2025.
